This I Believe

I believe words are the spell, I am the magic, and every time I open a book I can make it real.

I believe I have ridden the Hogwarts Express, voyaged on the Dawn Treader, been carried by seagulls in giant peach, flown to Camazotz on the back of Mrs. Witch, and hiked up God’s Thumb.

I believe a Canadian goose taught me to fly, a spider taught me to expand my vocabulary, Ramona Quimby taught me what to expect in kindergarten, and Cassie Logan taught me to battle injustice.

I believe I have been a sarcastic fourth-level djinni, a puppeteer bandit in Japan, a whipping boy for Prince Brat, a runaway to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Receiver of Memories for a pain-free community.

I believe I have taken a drink from the spring of eternal life, I have helped save Miss Honey from the Trunchbull, I have brought my toys to life inside a magic cupboard, and I have guarded my family from a vampire bunny.

I believe I learned about friendship in Terabithia, learned about equality on a raft floating down the Mississippi River, learned about heartbreak from the death of two coonhounds, and learned about courage fighting the Manta Diablo for the black pearl.

I believe Aslan watched over me when I was scared of the dark, Anne Shirley was one of my best friends in middle school, Vickie Austin helped me find my voice when I dreamed of being a writer, and my husband might be secretly jealous of Harry Potter.

I believe words are the spell, I am the magic, and every time I open a book I can make it real.
